Set in the border town of El Paso, TX, Sandra, 12, is be a part of her cousin, Karla’s, quinceñera party. As preparations are underway for the 15th-birthday ball and Catholic mass, Sandra runs away from confessing. She must confess so she can take the Catholic host at the quinceñera mass. Will she give up her dirty laundry or remain faithful to the washing machine?
The family waits in anticipation while Karla tries to avoid her little cousin’s pestering questions about growing up along the border of two different countries, traditions, and cultures.
The story looks at a young Chicana’s sexual coming-of-age in a Mexican American family.
